When to do Couples Therapy

You may be wondering, “how do I know when my relationship could benefit from couples therapy?” While each couple and situation is unique, there are some telltale signs that couples therapy could be helpful, such as, if one or both of you are feeling distant in the relationship; you’re feeling unsupported or dismissed; if there are trust or commitment issues; if conflicts are becoming hostile; or problems with intimacy.

However, things don’t necessarily have to be in dire straits for you and your partner to attend couples therapy. Premarital counselling can be helpful for making sure you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to creating these foundational aspects of a life together – before deciding to take the plunge; it can facilitate necessary conversations that, perhaps, you haven’t considered before, which can set you up for success.

On the flip side, maybe you and your partner have been together for years and are looking to “consciously uncouple.” Working through separation in a therapeutic setting can help ensure that both partners, and any children, approach the transition in a productive, healing manner. If you’re unsure whether couples therapy is right for you, feel free to ask questions. I’m here to help.
